Mother Teresa: Women of the Century remembering mother on her 16th death anniversary
Her family was of Albanian descent. But after her fater’s Death Teresa’s mother raised her as a Roman Catholic. In her early years Teresa very much interested in helping others poor people. She felt strongly the call of God. She left her home at the age of 18 to join the ‘Sisters of Loreto’ as a missionary. She never again see her parents .
Sisters of Loreto is an Irish Community that ha s missions in India. Use to teach School childrens in India. She arrived in India in 1929 and complete her novitiate from Darjeling.
Mother starts her missionary works for poor in 1948. Replacing Her traditional Loreto habit with simple sari. And she studied some medical courses from pune.
In 1950 she founded the community Missionaries of Charity. Its start with 12 people now it has more than 4000 members
In 1962 mother awarded Padma Shri for her distinguished services. This was first prize for her humanitarian works.
